Cellulite appears as changes occur within the layer beneath the dermis called the hypodermal layer or subcutaneous fat layer. These fat cells become enlarged and take on irregular shapes. The once flexible collagen fiber columns can become rigid and brittle. Because of the stiffness of these columns they pull the skin in some areas while the enlarged fat cells push and create protrusions in other areas. The result is the dimpled surface known as cellulite.

The SmoothShapes system featuring Photomology® technology facilitates changes in the skin resulting in an improvement in the appearance of cellulite. Photomology combines dynamic laser and light energy with contoured rollers and vacuum to specifically impact the underlying causes of cellulite.

Each cell membrane is like a fine mesh strainer. Light energy directly increases the permeability of the fat cell membrane. As the light penetrates, the mesh widens. While this light is facilitating change, another laser wavelength is being applied simultaneously.

These wavelengths target fat cells and the lipids within the fat cells are liquefied. With the help of vacuum massage and mechanical manipulation, liquefied fat is able to move out and be transported to the body’s lymphatic system.

The fat cells become smaller and regain their more uniform shape. Collagen is rejuvenated and there’s better circulation throughout the treatment area.

The proprietary Photomology technology combines dynamic energy (laser and light) with mechanical manipulation (contoured rollers and vacuum) to reduce the appearance of cellulite. Photomology utilizes specific laser and light wavelengths to address the physical manifestations of cellulite: less flexible collagen and enlarged fat cells. Collagen is remodeled so skin is smoother and tighter and fat cells are restored. About Cellulite

Cellulite is a skin condition caused by enlarged fat cells that become trapped in an inflexible network of fibrous septae located in the hypodermis. Women more often suffer from cellulite because their subcutaneous fat layer is separated by thin vertical columns in contrast to the crisscross network that is found in men. In women with cellulite, these columns contain enlarged cells, and their design allows herniation to be more visible on the skin’s surface.

Cellulite appears when fat cells just under the skin swell or enlarge and the once flexible collagen bands become rigid and firm and no longer stretch properly. This cell structure change is what causes the dimpled skin known as cellulite.

Contrary to popular belief, the formation of cellulite does not result from poor diet, lack of exercise or increased body fat; cellulite can be apparent on very lean and toned females as well. Instead, several genetic and physical factors contribute to the formation of cellulite. These include:

• Hormonal Factors – Hormones, not exercise or diet, primarily regulate fat storage and metabolism in the subcutaneous fat layer.
• Vascular Changes – Increased deposition of GAGs (glycosaminoglycans) exerts pressure on the capillary walls, which leads to vessel permeability and excess fluid in the dermis, adipocytes and lobes of the fibrous septae. The ensuing edema results in vascular compression, decreased venous return and less oxygenation of the tissue in the fibrous septae.
• Connective Tissue Changes – When the fibrous septae housing the enlarged fat cells becomes stiff and cannot stretch, herniation of subcutaneous fat cells extrudes into the dermis, causing bumps and dimpling.

Studies show that 85-98% of post-pubertal women suffer from some degree of cellulite. However, with the lack of proven treatments available, many practitioners and patients are looking for a solution they can trust and believe in. SmoothShapes® employs a scientific approach to the cellulite dilemma.

The Photomology module of the SmoothShapes device delivers Low Intensity Light Therapy (LILT) and moderated temperature elevation (≤41°C) combined with vacuum and mechanical massage for restorative, non-destructive treatment of cellulite and skin rejuvenation. It improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage in the treated tissue and gently stimulates natural cell processes that modify cell activity leading to: (1) alteration in cells’ behavior, (2) restoration of normal cell activity, and (3) improvement of tissue functionality. Photomology simultaneously addresses the physical manifestations of cellulite and alleviates some underlying causes of cellulite. This two level approach improves existing condition and promises longer lasting results.
